MUSLIMS

MUST AVENGE OSAMA'S ASSASINATION -IT IS THEIR

ISLAMIC DUTY

An appeal by S.M.PASHA, Convener,
ALL INDIA FORUM OF MUSLIM JOURNALISTS.
Chennai
South India

Osama bin Laden's death has brought joy to some and sorrow to others.  Those who rejoice will do well to peruse the Suratur Rum ( chapter 30 of the Quran) and  those grieve are  advised to read Suratur Rahman  (Chapter 55),  as the former reminds those who rejoice that  joy is closely followed by  sorrow and the latter that everything and everybody  has to taste Death except Allah, the Most Majestic Lord of the Universe. To the wise, these hints are enough.

Osama, whose death is much talked about, was just yet another successful   Saudi Arabian businessman. He was a blue-eyed boy of the King. He was Number One  in Saudi's efforts to fund Arab fighters  battling against Soviet Union backed Afghanistan Government.  This exalted status was in place till he eventually turned against the Saudi monarch when the latter decided to

allow American troops on the Arabian peninsula during the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990-1991.   Consequently, he was stripped of Saudi citizenship by  His Majesty the King of Saudi Arabia and Custodian of the holy Harmain-e-Shareefain  in 1994.

The dramatic announcement about slaying of the fugitive and the manner in which his dead body was disposed of, has to be taken with a lot of salt. Assuming for argument's sake was slain, Osama was slain by American troops, why was the body so hurriedly and so heartlessly lowered into the sea.

Yet another important point which deserves to be examined by legal pundits is: America's action inside Pakistan without the latter's knowledge and consent,is, per se, unlawful as per  International Law. Pakistan has raised this question but the tone of its resentment and protest is extremely mild. The reason is not difficult to guess. If it does forcefully, it will without an iota of doubt, lose the crumbs, which are thrown by Uncle Sam.

America has violated all the canons of International Law and so Obama, its President, is a war criminal who must be hauled up before the International Court of Justice. Such a demand is a just and honourable demand.

Muslims can and should avenge Osama's assassination not by indulging in terrorist activities but through all possible and available peaceful means. Gandhiji, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King have proved the power of non-violent struggle even as our Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s.) showed it 1400 years ago. Osamas may Osamas may go but the struggle by Muslims
against oppression and injustice  should go on unabated till the goal is achieved'

MUSLIMS  REMEMBER:
YOU WILL HAVE TO ANSWER ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMNENT  WHY THEY FAILED TO DISCHARGE THEIR ISLAMIC DUTY.

The killing of Osama bin Ladin, may Allah have mercy on him, if proven to be true, may either be a coincidence or part of a strategic manoeuvre by the US and its allies to justify the adoption of new tactics in their 'war on terror' that has clearly proven to be counterproductive. It may be alleged that he was killed a long time ago but the killing was only now announced as a justification for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. All of these are possibilities that no one can emphatically confirm, and indeed, there need not be an exertion of effort to confirm or disprove the claims as wisdom dictates that we deal with facts and realities whilst planning for the worst of scenarios.

Whatever the case may be, Osama left this worldly life to meet his Lord who is the ultimate judge. Almighty Allah knows everything about him, his actions, and the conspiracies that surround his life. He knows what Osama did, what he didn't do, and what we were made to believe that he did. In any case, he died as a Muslim and it is an established part of our Islamic creed that every Muslim, unlike the disbelievers, will eventually enter paradise. According to a number of scholars, the Muslim killed by the enemies of Islam is considered a martyr, regardless of whether he died during combat or simply in a state of non-combative military engagement such as being killed whilst sleeping. Other scholars limit the title of martyr only to those Muslims who are killed during active combat. Whatever the case may be, all scholars have agreed that mistakes made by a Muslim fighter in combat do not deprive him of his rights, whether it be the right of regarding him a martyr or any other Islamic right. The Prophet (peace be upon him) became very angry at his close companion Usamah ibn Zayd when he killed a disbeliever after he had said "there is no God but Allah". The Prophet furiously repeated, "have you killed him after he said: there is no God but Allah!" However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) continued to appoint Usamah ibn Zayd as the general of the Muslim army and actually appointed him to lead the biggest military expedition that was undertaken during the Prophet's life.

Any position we adopt must be bound by the guidelines of the Shari'ah and free from emotions and personal whims. We should intend to say (and act upon) what pleases Allah and not what pleases certain individuals, groups or governments. Saddam Hussain, may Allah have mercy on him, was amongst the persons most hated by Muslims having committed many heinous crimes. However, when he was hung he proclaimed: "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger". Based upon this, we have no choice but to ask Allah to bestow His mercy upon Saddam as he clearly died a Muslim. Allah informs us that he does not give the courage to any person on his/her deathbed to declare the testimony of faith unless he or she is a true Muslim. Allah says,

"Allah will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm in this world and in the Hereafter. And Allah will cause to go astray those who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.), and Allah does what He wills."[1]

Having said this, I would like to state that although these matters are in agreement with Islamic principles, the application of the principles in relation to certain individuals should not be a cause of fitnah and disunity among Muslims. Unity of Muslims and the purity of their hearts towards each other must be observed regardless of the scale of disagreements between them, as long as the scale of disagreement remains within the bounds of Islam.

Even though we fundamentally disagree with al-Qaeda and we condemn the unjustified killing that is attributed to them, it was very much instigated by the enemies of Islam themselves. In fact, I strongly believe that the presence of al-Qaeda is pleasing to the US especially as it allows the US justification for their crimes. In comparison, any amount of people killed by al-Qaeda has undoubtedly been trebled by the killing sprees of the US in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Gaza and other countries.

It is surprising how this major world Superpower was not only terrorized by a single man walking the face of the earth, but was also terrorized by him even whilst dead. President Obama declared that they would deal with the body of Bin Ladin in accordance with Islamic law and thus they threw it into the sea. This is the so-called respect that the US shows to Islam. In reality, these are the actual morals and values that America really calls for.

Whatever we say, Allah has the final say, and on the day of resurrection the truth will be revealed. Muslims will dwell in the delight of paradise and the disbelievers will be burned in the hellfire forever.

"These two opponents (believers and disbelievers) dispute with each other about their Lord; then as for those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them, boiling water will be poured down over their heads. With it will melt or vanish away what is within their bellies, as well as (their) skins. And for them are hooked rods of iron (to punish them). Every time they seek to get away from it out of anguish, they will be driven back therein, and (it will be) said to them: "Taste the torment of burning!" Truly, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous good deeds, to Gardens underneath which rivers flow (in Paradise), wherein they will be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearls and their garments therein will be of silk. And they are guided (in this world) unto goodly speech and they are guided to the Path of He who is Worthy of all praises."[2]

By Gulshan Ara
The killing of Osama bin Laden (OBL) has proved five things—1) Bin Laden
lived like a state guest, 2) Pakistan's military is either involved or
incompetent in protecting its guest, 3) CIA out-smarted the ISI in the spy war,
4) Pakistan's determination to never come out of its typical state of
denial, and 5) Pashtuns were wrongly labeled as bin Laden's hosts in mountainous
tribal regions.
That bin Laden was a state guest is clear from his life style. Few
Pakistanis can afford accommodations in Pakistan's summer stations like Abbottabad
or Murree with a troupe of wives, children, couriers, servants, and SUVs.
No one of his stature on this planet can afford a secret life for 10 long
years without leaving traces until and unless state provides that privacy.
In this age of technology, many would agree that none can afford covering
asses under the naughty radars. Access to organic veges, chickens, home grown
rabbits, fresh olives, Arabian dates, milk of goats and cows and a life
full of sex—imagine it. Only a state guest and not the guest of an illiterate
Pashtun tribesman can enjoy such a hospitality.
OBL's raided accommodation is at a stone's throw from Pakistan's military
academy at Kakul which provides training to commissioned officers, in a
town known as military city. It has two regiments and one medical corps. It's
the only city where uniformed men are clearly visible in civilian markets,
transport, on roads and streets. They no more roam on the streets of
Lahore, Peshawar or Multan. While many question why OBL would have opted for
living in Abbottabad, the hosts' decision of providing him a house there was
perfect. Its residents are often non-locals and have lesser level of
socialization. The language, ethnic background and class association are major
barriers that keep the residents away from one another. In a street of seven
houses, the possibility is that one resident may be a local, the second from
Kohistan, third from Peshawar, fourth from Lahore, and the next neighbor
can be a rich Afghan refugee or a tribal elder. It's again very much
possible that one neighbor might have a military background, the other a
businessman, a professor and yet another might be one making money in real estate.
They would also speak different languages ranging from Hindko, Urdu,
Pashto, Punjabi, to Kohistani and even Dari (Afghan version of Farsi). A
state-run institute can easily monitor streets and markets of such a diverse town
as compared to a city of identical backgrounds.
Bringing OBL from his last reported location, Tora Bora in Afghanistan in
2001, to Abbottabad is a task that can hardly be attributed to an
individual or a tribe or a group. In a country like Pakistan where military is the
first, last and the lonely force visible on a security gallery, no one else
can dare getting close to OBL and his associates. His life style, sense of
confidence, proximity with military bases, and living without armed guards—
all show that OBL believed he was in safe hands.
The nature of operation is a shame for ISI and Pakistan's security
mechanism. First, the ISI didn't prove its trustworthiness among its American
counterparts. CIA chief Leon Panetta said Pakistan would have jeopardized the
raid and were therefore kept in the dark. Second, it was considered as an
ally of the terrorists and hence CIA made efforts to keep it secret from the
ISI. The winner of the spy war was no doubt CIA and not the ISI. Its head
General Shuja Pasha should resign to reduce the level of 'embarrassment'
and acknowledge his failure. Third, the operation has clearly passed on a
message to Pakistanis that their spy agency had juxtaposed its interests with
those of the bad guys on the Earth.
Those who have still doubts they need to wait when Mullah Omar, after a
bit of ferreting, is recovered from Quetta cantonment and OBL's lieutenant
Aiman al-Zawahiri from some cool summer station near a military base in
coming months or years.
Living in a 'state of denial' is epidemic in Pakistan. Its leaders,
military and civilian, mediamen, and representatives of state have a big 'no'
for facts. Ask them Pakistan has become a terror hub, and they will say it
is a safe place for investment. Chief of Army Staff General Kayani announced
in Abbottabad eight days before OBL's killing that Pakistan armed forces
had broken the back of militants. He was calling the shots just 800 yards
away from OBL's complex.
While the world was questioning ISI's role, doubting it as a protector of
OBL, Prime Minister Gilani was telling in Paris, "world shares blame for
failure on bin Laden".
The whole world, including mainstream Muslim Umma and religious clerics,
call OBL a terrorist but attorneys in Peshawar and Abbottabad, columnists,
TV show hosts and guests praise him as a hero and consider the raid on OBL's
house was violation of Pakistan's sovereignty.
Like Americans, Pashtuns in general and tribals in particular, came out
victorious in the OBL saga. He was not killed in the mountains of Pashtuns
but in a place controlled and administered by Pakistan military. Islamabad
did its best telling the world OBL is the guest of conservative, hard
fighting Pashtuns in their tough terrain all these years.
Never in history, military of a country stigmatized its own co-citizens
but in Pakistan, the smaller nations--Pashtun, Sindhi and Baloch are being
presented as bad guys in the country's Punjab-dominated security apparatus.
A huge relief for Pashtuns and shame for those who think OBL's agenda will
make the country prosperous. Pashtuns were pleading from day one that they
were being used in the War on Terror. OBL's presence in a military city of
Pakistan also lent weight to Kabul's calls that terrorists were across the
border in their safe havens—or 'hands'?—in main cities.

Geelani leads funeral prayers of the slain Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden Shaheed

WASIM KHALID

Srinagar, May 6: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, on Friday led funeral prayers in absentia of the slain Al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden Shaheed at Batamaloo here. Funeral prayers for Osama were also held at various other places across the valley on the call of Geelani. Special prayers were also held for Osama in many masjids.
The Hurriyat (G) leader was put under house arrest by the authorities and his movement was crippled by a contingent of police deployed outside his Hyderpora residence this morning. However, later the authorities wavered on the decision and Geelani was allowed to offer the prayers.

After Geelani along with hundreds of people offered the funeral prayers outside the Batamaloo Shrine, he described Osama bin Laden as a martyr.

"We are concerned about the killing and offer our condolences," Geelani said while addressing the gathering. "After he was martyred and buried in the sea, the Muslims and Muslim scholars around the world are angry and expressed there anguish and expressed disappointment. It has hurt Muslim sensibilities throughout the world. The scholars have also urged for leading the in-absentia prayers of the martyr. We have also done the same," the veteran leader said.

He said many "power drunken" nations of the world are using their army, sophisticated war machinery and modern technology to impose there hegemony on the weaker people.

"I strongly urge that strength and power should be acquired by the God fearing people by hard work and dedication," Geelani said. "Only then peace will come in the world."
He stressed that for peaceful world, it is imperative that Palestine, Chechnya should be granted freedom and western forces should leave Afghanistan and Iraq. "And there should be end of illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir," he said.

"Peace will remain elusive till India does not withdraw its troops and implement United Nations resolutions," Geelani said. "If they say people are participating in the voting process, it is high time right to self-determination should be implemented. Wherever majority will vote, the decision will be respected."

Geelani had appealed to Imams across the Kashmir Valley and the people to offer funeral prayers of Osama Shaheed after the Friday prayers.

He also demanded that all the youth and political prisoners should be released with immediate effect. Geelani also spoke abut his continuous house detention and said he was forcibly detained at his residence and his movement was being restricted.

Referring to Pakistan, Geelani said it was the only Islamic country with the nuclear power. "The country is surrounded on all sides by the dangerous forces who want it should give up the nuclear weapons. It's a larger conspiracy to weaken the Islamic nation. I appeal people to pray for Pakistan so that it comes out of these difficult times. We should pray for the safety and prosperity of Pakistan."

Lastly, while speaking on the social issues in Kashmir, he said the co-education system in valley should be stopped. "There should be separate schools, colleges and universities for the women folk," Geelani said.

Following the speech, the area resonated with slogans like "We want freedom" and "Go India Go Back." The authorities deployed many contingents of policemen and CRPF personnel on law and order duties.

Soon after, large groups of youth while raising slogans started pelting stones on the police. The police retaliated by chasing them and hurling stones. One civilian was ruthlessly beaten in Batamaloo Chowk by the security personnel. The pitched battles continued till late evening.

Sensing trouble, reinforcements were called in. Senior police officers also arrived at the spot to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, Chairman Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Ahmad Shah, also led in absentia prayers of Osama at Iqra Mosque Saraibala here. He said Al Qaeda chief was against the enslavement of Muslim politics and religion.

"So it's incumbent for every Muslim to offer his funeral prayers," Shah said. "After he was martyred in custody, his burial in the sea was disgrace to Muslim sensibilities. It was an act of cowardice."

Shah said Osama was not just a name of a person but he represented an ideology which rarely dies with the person.

"He was a very rich man. He left his luxurious life for the benefit of Muslims," he added.

The in absentia prayers of Osama were offered at many places like Nowgam, Samundarbagh, Sopore, Bandipora, Pulwama and south Kashmir.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Abdul Gani Mir said the call for funeral prayers in absentia for Osama bin laden after Friday prayers evoked very little response as people generally ignored the call.

"The funeral prayers in absentia were only reported from a very few places. In Batamaloo, Srinagar, after the funeral prayers in absentia and just after Syed Ali Shah Geelani who also attended the prayers left, some miscreants pelted stones. There were no reports of injury to anyone," DIG added.

He further said that it was also observed at Bandipora and at Baramulla that when Syed Ali Shah Geelani visited these places, stone pelting was also reported just after he left the places where he addressed people.

PRAYERS IN CHENNAI MOSQUE

PTI adds from Chennai: Funeral prayers were held in a mosque here for slain al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden Shaheed and its Imam slammed the US for 'inhumanly' killing and burying him in the sea.

"America killed him inhumanly and left his body in the sea without performing Janazah. So, we conducted Janazah (funeral prayer) for him," Moulana Shamsudeen Qasimi, the Imam of Makkah Masjid in Anna Salai, said. Asked whether they had sought permission from police, the Imam said "it was conducted inside the mosque. We need police permission only if it was conducted in a public place."
