PPP Human Rights Cell for justice for Fakhra Yunus

The PPP Human Rights Cell members have expressed deep sorrow on the tragic death of acid crime victim Fakhra Yunus and called for justice for her.

The Central Coordinator  Nafisa Shah has termed Fakhra's death a sad reflection on the state of the criminal justice system in the country which failed to identify and punish the culprits.

"The courts often take up such matters as suo moto but what about the cases such as Fakhra where the routine trials fail to punish the culprits" said Shah. "If twelve years down the road the main accused is freed, who was responsible for defacing Fakhra Yunus, is the question we all need to ask, and why did the criminal justice system fail in telling us who it was. Surely the perpetrator who defaced Fakhra needs to be unmasked and punished," she added.  Her death should not go in vain, and both the courts and the law enforcement agencies especially the police investigation system need to reexamine and revisit the case.

While welcoming the immediate notice taken by the Sindh government and reopening of this case, and the recent amendments in the laws initiated by the women parliamentary caucus, which have increased the punishment for this offence, the PPP Human Rights Cell has called for comprehensive and dedicated law on acid crime in the provinces with a special focus on provision of fully funded treatment and rehabilitation at the national and provincial levels for victims of acid crime.

Signed

Nafisa Shah
